  1. Capital of the Moldavian Republic, USSR;
  2. population (1987) 663,000. Industries include
  3. cement, food processing, tobacco, and
  4. textiles. Founded 1436, it became Russian
  5. 1812. It was taken by Romania 1918, by the
  6. USSR 1940, and by Germany 1941, when it was
  7. totally destroyed. The USSR recaptured the
  8. site 1944, and rebuilding soon began.
  9. Nationalist demonstrations were held in the
  10. city during 1989.
